In the beginning all nurses wore baggy white gowns with flaring white headdresses, just like nuns wore. However, nursing uniforms have truly evolved over the years and have becoming more and more unconventional, even being altered to use as sexy Halloween costumes. Even with the new styles and designer scrubs, the term “fashionable scrubs” still seems to be somewhat contradictory, though.

Nurses and Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is a very serious disease that can strike women of any age. This is why cancer awareness is so important today. Those in the healthcare field and nursing fields are very much aware of this as they care for and stand by women going through treatment. Women really need to be able to get medical treatment just as soon as they notice the very first signs of a lump. When breast cancer is caught early, the survival rate is close to 90%. Sadly this doesn’t always happen and 40,000 women per year will die of this type of cancer (2010 statistics). It is unfortunate that these women were unable to detect their breast cancer while it was still in its early stages. Sometimes women are scared to get checked. Sometimes women don’t get checked because of the fact that there isn’t nearly enough being done in the way of breast cancer awareness. Nurses and others in the healthcare industry are in a unique position to help inform men and women about breast cancer.

Why the Medical Community Uses Scrubs

Almost everyone who works in the medical field today wears scrubs. Just think about everyone who works at your doctor’s office or local hospital. The only ones that you probably see not wearing scrubs are doctors who wear long lab coats and the people who work in the front office and maybe wearing street clothes or “business dress”. On the other hand, some doctors, their assistants, surgeons, technologists, lab workers, caregivers, and people who transport the patients all wear scrubs. While these scrubs use to be all white, then they were green, and now you can find them in almost any color. There are even scrubs that are available today which have cartoon characters and other novelty prints on them.

You may also not thinking of fashion when you think of nursing scrubs because it doesn’t seem like the words “fashion” and “scrubs” even belong in the same sentence. You may think that just because you are in the medical profession that you have to give up on being in style at the change of seasons.

A part of self-image is how we feel in what we wear. This is also true for nurses and other healthcare professionals that must wear nursing scrubs to comply with a dress code. When you wear something nice, that fits good, and looks good on you, it can help you to feel really good about yourself. Unfortunately, medical employees cannot just wear whatever they want. They must wear nursing scrub uniforms at work. Fortunately, there are uniform designs available that are quite impressive, stylish, and professional looking. Of course, there are also some designs that may be too simple and unfashionable for some employees and they simply don’t want to wear them. Others in the healthcare industry prefer basic and simple or are required to wear that style at the medical facility that they work at.
