Red Kap started out as a family business named Harlin Bros. & Williams in 1923. The owners were two brothers from Nashville, TN and a cousin (by marriage). They started out selling bib overalls. The overalls were comfortable and durable and the company began to grow.
The owners knew as their company grew, that they would need to differentiate their products. The Red Cap Brazil Smoking Tobacco inspired the name change to Red Kap. It was common at the time for horse enthusiasts, like the owners, to smoke and the colorful label with the red jockey cap on the tobacco package caught the eye of one of the owners. The official name change from Harlin Bros. & Williams to Red Kap became official in 1939, but the recognizable logo was founded in 1927.
Diversification began in the 1930’s when Red Kap offered matching work pants and shirts. They followed that with “Go-Getter” chambray shirts that were competitively priced. When the World War II began, Red Kap didn’t let the war stop them; instead they supported the war effort and manufactured the following:
• Gas mask carriers
• Combat fatigues
• Field jackets
The above were comfortable and durable just like the products they manufactured for their own line.
When World War II ended, Red Kap teamed up with a network of laundries that provided pickup and delivery of business uniforms as well as supplying uniforms. Red Kap became a major player in the work wear industry by the 1960’s with the addition of coveralls to their line.
In 1946, Red Kap became part of Blue Bell, which in 1986 became part of the VF Imagewear family of brands, which includes brands like Wrangler, Vans, Lee, North Face, Jansport, Reef, and many other well-known quality brands.
