Medical Scrubs Evolved

hospital-medical-scrubsWhile you probably have heard of scrubs and may even wear them daily yourself, you probably don’t know the history behind them.  Scrubs are medical uniforms that came into existence in the twentieth century and replaced street clothes and traditional nursing uniforms for medical personel.

The reason that scrubs got their name was due to the fact that physicians would thoroughly “scrub” their hands before they performed any type of medical procedures and change to sanitary clothing.  Most doctors would then change into scrubs before performing a surgical procedure in the same way that they still do today.  Today almost everyone who works within the medical field and has contact with patients now wears scrubs.  Scrubs have now replaced even the traditional nursing uniform (a starched white uniform dress with a small white cap, white stockings, and white apron) too.  This is because it is widely believed that scrubs will help keep bacteria from spreading.

Originally scrubs were all white but now they have changed to green and even this color is still evolving.  The reason for this change in color is that white clothing reflects light.  As such, it isn’t a particularly pleasant color to look at.  It can even be irritating for some patients and cause eyestrain with medical professionals. Today you can purchase scrubs in a multitude of different colors and prints.  Some of the scrub designs are even meant to be patient friendly.  For instance, you can purchase scrubs that have designs like bears, racecars, clowns, and even cartoons.  These are meant to make children feel calmer and more comfortable while they are in a difficult hospital environment. It also has been proven to help adults.

Whenever you are shopping for a pair of scrubs today, you should look for them to be loose fitting and very comfortable.  This is important because you want to be sure that they allow for you to be completely mobile. They should also comply with the facility’s dress code requirements.

The scrubs that you purchase will need to be laundered on a regular basis.  In fact, they should actually be washed every time that they are worn.  This should be done at a high temperature in order to kill any germs or bacteria that they may be contaminated with. A disinfectant can be added to assure a sanitary uniform.

Scrubs aren’t just for the operating room.  Many medical facilities and healthcare providers wear scrubs for their uniform. In fact there are now a lot of people who are actually wear scrubs at home.  These people are not even associated with the medical profession in any way, but have simply found that scrubs are comfortable, durable, and great to wear on a casual basis. With designers jumping into the nursing scrub arena, the scrubs are now also very stylish.
