Nurses and Breast Cancer Awareness

all-uniform-wear-breast-cancer-awareness-productsBreast cancer is a very serious disease that can strike women of any age.  This is why cancer awareness is so important today.  Those in the healthcare field and nursing fields are very much aware of this as they care for and stand by women going through treatment. Women really need to be able to get medical treatment just as soon as they notice the very first signs of a lump. When breast cancer is caught early, the survival rate is close to 90%. Sadly this doesn’t always happen and 40,000 women per year will die of this type of cancer (2010 statistics). It is unfortunate that these women were unable to detect their breast cancer while it was still in its early stages. Sometimes women are scared to get checked. Sometimes women don’t get checked because of the fact that there isn’t nearly enough being done in the way of breast cancer awareness. Nurses and others in the healthcare industry are in a unique position to help inform men and women about breast cancer.

There are actually a lot of very simple ways in which breast cancer awareness can be raised.  Just look around and you will find that there are a lot of products like the following:

  • T-shirts
  • Reusable grocery bags
  • Bracelets
  • Tote bags
  • Nursing scrubs
  • Jewelry

The items being sold with the pink ribbon on them often have a portion of the sale going towards breast cancer research, breast cancer survivors, and breast cancer awareness. You will also find some websites that sell these items will have an option for you to click on a link that donates money to this research for every click of a button and without anyone having to pull out their wallet!

A great way in which you can help raise money for breast cancer awareness is by participating in the Susan G. Komen race for the cure, Avon’s 2 day walk, or the Making Strides race. Even if you don’t want to race in this event, you participate by walking or you can sponsor someone who is racing. Oftentimes you will receive a t-shirt whenever you do participate.  Simply by wearing the t-shirt after the race, you can help to raise breast cancer awareness. When participating in one of the races you can wear a sign that shows that you are participating in memory of someone who died of breast cancer or in honor of someone who survived breast cancer. If you are participating as a breast cancer survivor, each of these races will treat you and a guest like a king or queen with specially designed t-shirts, gifts, and breakfasts.

While a lot of women throughout the United States today now know about the effect that breast cancer can have on their life, many of them ignore the procedures that will help them to detect this cancer early on.  For instance, women over 40-years-old need to have a yearly mammogram but many of these women don’t even go to see their doctor on a yearly basis.  This type of negligence can lead to serious problems, which is why it is so important to encourage every woman in this age bracket to get periodic breast exams.  Of course, some of these breast exams can be performed at home.  Doctors say that this should be done periodically while showering in order to detect any possible lumps or irregularities early. It is important to help women understand that they really do need to take care of themselves. If ignored, cancer can be deadly.  However, if caught early enough, the survival rate is increased drastically.

Anyone in the healthcare industry can raise awareness for breast cancer by accessorizing your nursing scrubs with breast cancer awareness items.
