Why the Medical Community Uses Scrubs

medical-scrubsAlmost everyone who works in the medical field today wears scrubs.  Just think about everyone who works at your doctor’s office or local hospital.  The only ones that you probably see not wearing scrubs are doctors who wear long lab coats and the people who work in the front office and maybe wearing street clothes or “business dress”. On the other hand, some doctors, their assistants, surgeons, technologists, lab workers, caregivers, and people who transport the patients all wear scrubs. While these scrubs use to be all white, then they were green, and now you can find them in almost any color. There are even scrubs that are available today which have cartoon characters and other novelty prints on them.

In the past, doctors performed operations on patients wearing their street clothes that they already had on. Eventually doctors began to put on an apron but it wasn’t necessarily a new or clean apron that they would put on for each and every operation. However, as they began to learn more and more about germs and infection and how to keep things sanitary, they began to wear scrubs. The first scrubs that doctors wore were white.  Many patients thought that this color was too stark whenever blood would get onto them.  For this reason the color changed from white to green.  One of the main reasons for scrubs though was that they were easy to change into and easy to clean too.

Anyone who works within the healthcare system today has a lot of different scrubs that they can choose from.  This is because there are a lot of catalogs and online stores from which you can purchase scrubs now.  Now you can choose between wearing designer scrubs, ones that have cartoon characters on them, holiday scrubs, scrubs that you can mix and match, and much more. There are even scrubs available with your school’s colors or insignia on them if you graduated from a nursing school that you are particularly proud of.

A lot of medical offices like all of their staff to wear color-coordinated scrubs in order to create a feeling of professionalism throughout their office. Fortunately, these can be purchase from a variety of different places and in a variety of different colors.  However, it is important to understand that scrubs don’t just provide a sense of professionalism but that they also help patients be able to identify the medical staff and provide sanitary conditions on the job.  The sanitary aspect comes from the fact that you can easily change into and out of scrubs so that you don’t have to wear them home from your job.  This is especially important if there has been some type of contact with people’s bodily fluids.
